Court Support Services
One of our mandates as a Community Based Victim Services Workers is to provide Court Support for women who are victims of Physical or sexual assault, stalking and harassment. Court support has several components, including:information and assistance in accessing the justice system;court preparation and accompaniment;liaison with crown counsel; accompaniment to police for the Statement; ongoing emotional support throughout the process.
This includes the following:
- Our worker accompanies and supports victims and witnesses in court.
- The support person will sit with the witness while they wait to testify.
- The support person will also sit in the court room while the witness testifies*.
- Assistance to the woman's family, to witnesses and non-offending family members.
Due to the nature of some evidence, it is not always in the victim's best interest to have family in the court room while testifying. To ensure victims are not alone during this process, Vancouver & Lower Mainland CBVS feels it is important to make a support person available.
