CHILDREN WHO WITNESS ABUSE

The Children Who Witness Abuse Program provides one-on-one counselling and group counselling to children of different ethnic backgrounds. It supports the children and provides them a safe environment to express their feelings and to develop social, problem-solving and coping skills. The services provided to individuals and groups focus on:
Letting the children know that they are not alone;
Letting the children know it is not their fault;
Enhancing problem solving and coping skills;
Planning safety skills and strategies.

Children and youth, age 0 to 19, need to be in a stable environment prior to receiving counselling. Counselling for expecting mothers and parenting groups are also provided. Upon request, group counselling can be held at the school. Confidentiality is strictly maintained. Services are free. SPECIALIZED VICTIMS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

We offer Court Advocacy and assistance for immigrant and visible minority women and children who are in need of accessing the justice system. Women who are victims of sexual or physical abuse/assault, spousal assault, childhood abuse, stalking, hate crime or any other crimes, and children and youth who are victims of sexual or physical abuse, date rape, bullying, childhood abuse, stalking, hate crime and other violence can receive:

Assistance and orientation to the justice system on the following:

Police, crown file information
Victim impact statement
An overview of the Court system
Court case results
Victim's compensation

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Someone to talk to
Support for the non-offending parents
Court and police, crown accompaniment
Assistance to the victim's family and to witnesses and non-offending family members

Liaison with other services

Referral to our multicultural workers and to:
Emergency social services
Transition Houses
Community Agencies
Legal/social systems

VOLUNTEERS PROGRAM

The Program is open to our clients and to everyone interested in working with immigrant women and families. Volunteers support our staff by performing general office duties, getting involved in challenging projects such as organizing small discussion groups for immigrant women, or teaching survival English classes, offering Income Tax Clinics and other initiatives useful to our clients.

Volunteers enjoy great flexibility in their working hours, are encouraged to participate in our free workshops on women's issues and in our Leadership Training Program.They can receive Certificates of Appreciation and Recognition. A letter of reference is provided to those who donated 60 volunteer hours in three months.

The Leadership Training Program (L.T.P.)is an interactive program focussed on self-development, communication and leadership skills. It also provides education about the Canadian justice system, health system and other issues that are relevant to immigrant women.

The Program is offered once a year, and aims at immigrant and visible minority women who have experienced abuse in the home or who are motivated to help other women in their communities.
